Thank you for your work. Am reading the book. No more television. No more Facebook. So many books to read and so much to learn about economics, history, sociology, etc. Taking notes as a student and chewing the bits slowly and thoroughly. Feeling emotional this fourth and thinking that for the whole of my life I knew I would always have hot dogs, potato salad and freedom. Now I am floating adrift, trying to make my way to the edge of the pool and grab on, knowing that I will still need the strength to pull myself out and onto the grass. Sweet green grass of freedom! It’s too great to be lost, this country. I came to her shores at six and fifty years later I have fallen in love all over again. Today I will soldier on and think good thoughts of those stronger than I. Thank you, thank you.
Indeed, we are all adrift. From free citizens to peons in the blink of an eye. But I always remember, and find strength in, the final words of 14th century Czech philosopher and church reformer, Jan Hus. As the flames of the fire starting burning his feet during his execution, he said the sentence that later became the talking cry for Czech freedom warriors: "Pravda vitezi" - "Truth wins" often translated as "Truth Shall Prevail" And it shall! Courage friend!
Never too late to give up TV! - Give some thought to reading old books; how about De Tocqueville's classic Democracy in America - it's forbiddingly thick - but you would soon be surprised what an easy delightful read it is - (I am taking a break after Part I (of 2)). And it's a true story; I mean, there used to be an "America" and it used to be "democratic" in an inspiring way and that simultaneously with the mistreatment of the native populations which the author pulls no punches in describing - he was on the scene on the Mississippi during the "trail of tears".
We don't learn from history, and so are doomed to repeat it.....As a Brit I can't comment on the war of independence stuff (it's not taught in history in fact, precious little about British Empire is tbh wonder why?) I think this fight is worldwide, not restricted to Western countries. Parts of Africa have already succumbed to the lure of digital ID (Nigeria is one), Scandinavia has a love love relationship with tech....😔
Tech isn't inherently bad or good, it just is. Whether it works to our benefit or enslaves us depends on how we manage it. We can't manage what we don't understand. Too many of us have failed to learn about the tech that is beginning to control us. Failure of the education system.
We rely on it too much. Some people are in thrall to it, see it as an answer to everything but it's not. It's fallible. See Glastonbury. They had to go cash only for a few hours and it caused chaos. We need to restore balance. The direction of travel appears anti human at the moment, which is disastrous for all of us.
Good post, thanks. It is "normal" to be struck by the totalitarian nature of Big Tech but then we don't live in normal times. Our Faustian bargain with Big Tech has handicapped our ability to use language or engage in any normal way. We unknowingly in most cases set ourselves up for a world of mass hysteria where almost no one understands what is actually happening. Big Tech and their cronies at the World Economic Forum and Bilderberg are working hard to protect the slim shreds of what remains.

You know, Michael -- I've just found your stack, great stuff -- you're an attorney: do you realize just how bad the situation is and how much money there is to be made exposing it in courts?
You're probably aware of targeted ads and the data brokers that make this possible. The reality is that big tech cooperates with USG to provide total access to all your devices, your cameras and microphones, at all times. My feeds -- and those of other wrongthinkers -- at multiple platforms spew mockery and intimidation based on my a/v in real time, and are sometimes clearly more than just an algorithm. I'm sure this being used against me and others in ways we will never know.
I've considered offering this to bug bounty hunters, but it's obviously a feature not a bug -- big tech is not interested in fixing it and would likely do anything to prevent having the vectors identified. Still it's worth pursuing and could make anyone who breaks the story and brings the cases extremely wealthy.
You might run a story about it and see if anyone has bright ideas for how to track and analyze the phenomenon.
Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, ... shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both;

So true. But what is there to do? Few knew what was coming. And those who did know were labeled conspiratorial thinkers each time they spoke out about the issues facing us.
Thank you penning these insights and history.... yes, we are in another revolution.. against all those who would try to crush this great Republic. Our founding Fathers knew this day would come.. and armed us with the great weapon of all... Our Constitution.
"Censorship … a story about modern culture, social-media, controlling the narrative, & thought-control generally. How this is playing out in Facebook, other social-media, & why the effect it is having is so insidiously evil & utterly destructive, both individually … and collectively, as a society."
BigTech make the original Nazi book-burners look like kindergarten children.
I find it amusing that many in the tech industry are rich in fiat and poor in hard human integrity. They worked their ass off to have the money to be independent (and/or powerful), and yet failed because they are hiding behind the gov laws (another paper fiat). They became rich by standing on the shoulders of others. Isn't it ironic they are not free?
I am reading 4000 thousand weeks, a very powerful book.
Woke and totalitarian are synonyms. Just think about it: the woke try to coerce (and if that doesn‘t work push) the majority of people who do not follow their ideology to comply. They use cancel culture, call you racist or white supremacist or whatever. They want everyone to comply to their ideology. Totalitarianism.
I always appreciate your writing and thoughts. May we all have the liberty to say often the best ideas and show the world we still are the cradle of freedom and can lead it and guide it to its best end.

Thank you Janet! Well said.

"ralying" cry, not "talking" - duh! 😊
We cannot give up! All is not lost... Yet. We can get much back. It's not too late. Thanks for sharing your beautiful words

They are!
It does not strictly repeat, but it rhymes.
This rhyming is not emergent or accidental. It's because the history then, and the events today, are organized by the same "poets".
Mr. Senger, you take your position alongside Mr. Paine for the power of your thought, research, and rhetoric. More essays like this can only help us.
Well done, sir.
High praise, thank you, sir!

How much is too much depends on control. Some are willing to let technology control them. We can't control what we don't understand.
a fitting article for the holiday.

I've come to equate the 2. Woke is Totalitarian, Totalitarian is Woke. Certainly wokism paves the road to totalitarianism.
As usual, well said piece.

Good point. Thanks Jshuan!

Why are they not proscuted?

I wrote this article several years back, once I realised how proactively censored I was being (real-time-screening by some heinous AI bot).
