To an extent celebrities have probably always been this way where live in a different age where I don't think celebrities can really attain the public respect they once had, or the mystical qualities of people like Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Clark Gable & Cary Grant.

Yes, they still said dumb things in the past, eg. John Wayne was overtly racist, Sean Connery said some questionable things about women's rights, but for the most part the only time their views were aired to the public was through heavily PR filtered professional interview settings.

Nowadays they can just log on to Twitter and post any old offensive, ill informed nonsense direct from their brains instantly, and it will get amplified all over the world & will continue to exist as screenshots even after they realise it was stupid & they should delete it. Our view of celebrity has shifted from something that was aspirational to now ridiculing them for being self indulgent, privileged & detached from reality.
